Located in the middle of the city, the Medieval Fortress is the green heart of Târgu Mureș, the place where locals and tourists meet for cultural events or for a walk in the fortress garden. With a history that represents the effervescent past of Transylvania, with moments of glory and moments of decline, the Fortress is the first fortified construction of the city, being built at the end of the 15th century, under the command of Voivode Ștefan Bathory (1479-1493), on some older vestiges.

Over time, the Fortress has undergone multiple changes, being destroyed and rebuilt several times. In the first phase, the Fortress would represent the city community which in 1616 acquired the rank of a free royal city from Prince Gabriel Bethlen. Along with the Church and the Franciscan monastery, in its current form, the Fortress has an area of ​​4.3 ha and is made up of seven bastions, most of them built in the 17th century, through the care of the city's guilds.

The Medieval Fortress was among the first industrialized fortifications in the country, the discovered brick factory, as well as the entire archaeological park that certifies the intense craft activity being testimonies of its past as a motor of local professional life. The bastions were used more as workshops than for guarding, they were never filled with earth: they did not meet the criteria of Italian-type artillery bastions.

In 2011, a large-scale rehabilitation work of the Fortress, financed by the European Union, began. Currently, the Fortress houses the collections of local artists, exhibition and event halls, creative workshops, the Reformed Church, the Museum of Archaeology and History, the "Marriage House", restaurants, and other cultural associations.

Functioning as a local cultural center, the Fortress is open to tourists from all over the world, being attractive both through the diversity of organized events, as well as through a guided tour of local history or, simply, for a walk through the green garden in the heart of Târgu Mureș town.
